This document sets 'ISE™- Institute for Software Engineering' policy on academic integrity. It applies to all courses that are part of the ISE™ program and applies to all students who take these courses.
The ISE™ program expects its students to be honest. Degrees are awarded on the basis of evidence that students have mastered course material and met all other requirements. Homework, assignments, term papers, examinations, and other assigned work provide evidence of that mastery as well as providing educational value for the student.
Our expectations:
The ISE™ expects absolute honesty from students at all times. This means, among other things:
Homework that you pass in is yours and yours alone.
Examinations, whether in class or take home, represent your work and not that of others. Notes and other reference materials are to be used during examinations only if allowed by the instructor. Time limits set by the instructor must be adhered to. The expectations for take home exams are identical to those for proctored, in class, examinations.
Term papers and projects especially if intended to represent independent and scholarly efforts. In many cases, it is appropriate to use the ideas of others, but when you do so, you must:
Accurately and completely cite your sources.
When you quote the words of others, it should be very clear that you are quoting.
If you are paraphrasing or relying on others ideas, the source must be clearly identified.
What we do when dishonesty is detected:
When dishonesty is suspected, the instructor will discuss the incident with the student involved, and if the instructor believes that the policy has been violated the offender and the offense will be reported to the Dean of the ISE™ program.
Each student involved is required to write a statement describing the dishonest acts that demonstrates his or her understanding of the nature of the wrongdoing and the seriousness of the offense. The Dean of the ISE™ will determine whether or not the statement is satisfactory and will work with the student to develop a satisfactory statement.
The instructor will award an appropriate grade for the work involved, typically zero for the assignment. The instructor may adjust the course grade (including awarding an F for the course) if this seems appropriate.
The student is warned in writing by the Dean, the student’s statement are made a part of the student’s record within the 'ISE™- Institute for Software Engineering' .
On the second offense, the student is dismissed from the ISE™ program and the fact of and reasons for the dismissal are communicated to the student’s home institution. If the student has not been officially admitted to the OMSE program, the student will be barred from registering for future ISE™ courses.
Students may appeal the decisions of the instructor to the Dean of the ISE™ who will take such action as seems appropriate. Subsequent appeals may be taken through the appeals process at the student’s home institution.
Gray areas:
It is permitted to discuss the general concepts and principles behind an assignment with other students, but it is not permitted to arrive at collective solutions. Each student is expected to develop, write, and submit an individual solution and, in doing so, develop a sufficient understanding of the problem and solution so as to be able to explain it adequately to the instructor. When in doubt: Ask the instructor .
