Everyone needs more and better, faster and cheaper software. The number and size of computer programs have grown dramatically. Billions of are being spent on software development and livelihood and lives of many people depends on the effectiveness of this development. Software applications have made us more efficient and productive. We have become effective problem solvers. In spite of these successes there are some serous problems in the cost, timeliness and quality of many software products.

Software development projects are the most complex of man-made system, so complex that even the most brilliant specialists can no longer manage using currently ingrained software development methodologies. We can no longer relay on past methodologies in developing software systems. The need for the organized discipline in software development will become more prominent in the future.

Software engineering applies engineering disciplines to software development, ensuring that software products meet organizational, financial, marketplace, and technical requirements. Like other fields of engineering, software engineering is a hybrid of scientific, technical and management principles. In short, software engineering is the engineering of software.
